When Is Deer Hunting Season for 2024/5? A State-by-State Guide

Deer hunting season is upon us. If you want to know the dates for each state, you’ve come to the right place.

Alabama

Deer season dates will vary depending on the management zones and whether it has antlers. For more information, visit the Alabama Legislative Services Agency

Bow and Arrow: October 15, 2024, to February 10, 2025. 

Gun Stalk: November 23, 2024 to February 10, 2025. 

Dog Deer Hunting: November 23, 2024 to January 15, 2025. 

Alaska

Season dates, draw use, and bag limits can vary, so check out Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations for more information. 

Archery and Firearms: August 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. 

Muzzleloader, Archery, Crossbow: Nov. 1-14, 2024 (Management Unit 8 Only)

Arizona

Deer hunting in Arizona is part of the lottery system, and seasons and bag limits vary with zones. For more information, check out Arizona Game and Fish.  

Archery: Aug. 25, 2024 to Jan. 31, 2025. 

Muzzleloader (Youth Only): Oct. 6 to Dec. 3, 2024. 

Firearms: Oct. 27 to Dec. 31, 2024. 

Antlered Deer: Oct. 25 to Dec. 1, 2024. 

Arkansas

Arkansas seasons and bag limits vary with zones, check out the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for more information. 

Archery:  September 28, 2024 to February 28, 2025.

Muzzleloader: October 19 to December 23, 2024.

Modern Gun:  November 9 to December 28, 2024.

Youth Modern Gun: November 2-3, 2024 and January 4-5, 2025.

California

Seasons vary significantly in different zones; see California Fish & Wildlife for more information.  

Archery: July 13 to October 27, 2024.

General: August 10 to November 24, 2024. 

Apprentice Hunts: October 5 to December 31, 2024.

Colorado

Note that Colorado has both over-the-counter and lottery licenses.  When you can hunt depends on the species of deer as well as the zones you are in, so be sure to check that when you buy your license.

Archery: September 2 to November 30, 2024. 

Muzzleloader: September 14 to October 20, 2024. 

Rifle: October 26 to December 14, 2024. 

Connecticut

Archery: Sept. 15 to Dec. 31, 2024, or until Jan. 31, 2025, in Zones 11 and 12.

Shotgun/Rifle: Nov. 20 to Dec. 10, 2024. 

Muzzleloader: Dec. 6-31, 2024.  

Junior: Nov. 9-16, 2024. 

Seasons vary with zones and whether or not you are on public or private land. 

Delaware

Delaware offers five months of hunting as follows:

Bow: Sept. 1, 2024 to Feb. 2, 2025.

Crossbow: Sept. 1, 2024 to Feb. 2, 2025.

Muzzleloader: Oct. 11-20, 2024 and Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, 2025.

General Firearm: Nov. 15-24, 2024 and Jan. 18-26, 2025

Youth: Sept. 28-29, Nov. 2-3, 2024. 

Florida

Seasons vary with zones and antlers; check out the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation for more information.

Bow and Arrow: August 3 to November 27, 2024.

Crossbow: August 3 to December 6, 2024.

Muzzleloader: September 7, 2024 to March 2, 2025. 

General Gun: September 21, 2024 to February 23, 2025. 

Youth: September 14 to December 8, 2024 (various weekends). 

Georgia

Archery: September 14 to October 11, 2024.

Extended Archery: September 14 to January 31, 2025.

Primitive Weapons & Youth-Only Firearms:  October 12–18, 2024.

Firearms:  October 19, 2024 to January 12, 2025.

Extended Firearms: October 19, 2024 to January 15, 2025.

Please note that firearms are prohibited in Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton (north of Highway 92), and within Jekyll Island in Glynn County. 

Hawaii

The 2024 deer hunting season in Lanai, Hawaii, is closed. However, the 2025 season is as follows:

Archery: February 5 to March 02, 2025. 

Youth: March 7–9, 2025. 

Muzzleloader: March 14–16, 2025. 

Rifle: March 21 to June 1, 2025. 

Idaho

Idaho’s seasons vary with different management units, which you can find more information on at Idaho Big Game

Archery: Aug. 30 to Dec. 24, 2024.

Muzzleloader: Sept. 8 to Dec. 1, 2024.

General: Sept. 15 to Dec. 1, 2024.

Illinois

Illinois uses a lottery system and needs a hunting license, so be sure you have everything in place to hunt legally. 

Bow: October 1, 2024 to January 19, 2025. 

Muzzleloader: December 13-15, 2024.

Firearm: November 22-24 and December 5-8, 2024. 

Youth: October 12-14, 2024. 

Indiana

Indiana has a big deer hunting season that starts just as you’re getting ready for winter. White-tailed deer are popular, with about 115,000 taken annually.

Archery: Oct. 1, 2024 to Jan. 5, 2025. 

Muzzleloader: Dec. 7–22, 2024.

General Gun: Nov. 16 to Dec. 1, 2024.

Youth: Sept. 28-29, 2024. 

Reduction Zone: Sept. 15, 2024 to Jan. 31, 2025.

General Gun: September 7-15, 2024.

Youth and Disabled: September 7-15, 2024. 

Kentucky

Deer hunting is popular in Kentucky, with more than 130,000 taken annually. 

Archery: Sept. 7, 2024 to Jan. 20, 2025.

Crossbow: Sept. 21, 2024 to Jan. 20, 2025.

Youth Gun: Oct. 12-13, 2024.

Muzzleloader: Oct. 19-20 and Dec. 14-22, 2024.

Modern Gun: Nov. 9-24, 2024.

Michigan

North Carolina

Black Powder: September 28 to November 19,  2024.

North Dakota

North Dakota uses a lottery system, so please see North Dakota Game and Fish for more information. 

Bow: August 30, 2024 to January 5, 2025. 

Muzzleloader: November 29 to December 15, 2024.

Youth: September 13-22, 2024. 

Ohio

Muzzleloader: January 4-7, 2025.

General Gun: December 2-8 and 21-22, 2024.

Oklahoma

Some areas of Oklahoma have unique regulations and licensing. For instance, hunters in Honobia Creek WMA, Three Rivers WMA, and the Oklahoma Land Access Program (OLAP) require a land access permit.

Archery: October 1, 2024 to January 15, 2025. 

Muzzleloader: October 26 to November 3, 2024.

General Gun: November 23 to December 8, 2024, and December 18-31, 2024 (antlerless).

Youth: October 18-20, 2024. 

Oregon

Hunts in Eastern Oregon are Controlled Hunts, and permits must be applied for archery and any other legal weapons. Dates for the western part of the state are as follows: 

Western Archery: August 31 to December 8, 2024. 

Western Oregon Any Legal Weapon: October 5 to November 8, 2024.

Pennsylvania

You are allowed one deer only per season, and seasons vary with zones. Please see the Pennsylvania Game Commission, or our Pennsylvania deer season guide, for more information. 

Muzzleloader: October 14-21, 2024.

Regular Firearms: November 25 to Dec. 9, 2024, and antlerless-only runs from December 26, 2024 to January 27, 2025.

Rhode Island

Even though it’s the smallest state, deer hunting is very popular here. See the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to find specific dates for different zones.

Tennessee

Vermont

Vermont is popular for its white-tailed deer. Hunters can hunt one legal buck each, and dates are statewide.  

Archery: October 1 to November 15 and Dec. 2-15, 2024. 

Muzzleloader: December 7-15, 2024.

Regular Gun: November 16 to Dec. 1, 2024.

Youth: October 26-27, 2024. 

Virginia
