It’s probably not much of a surprise that a tech company is telling you to buy bigger. But really, choosing a bigger portable power station may be worth the investment.
1. Extended Lifespan
The lifespan of a battery is measured in terms of how many times you use it, which are called cycles. Going from a battery level of 100% to 0% is one cycle; 100% to 50% is half of a cycle.
A bigger battery takes longer to complete one cycle. Imagine two identical phones, but one has a small battery, and one has a big battery. At the end of the day, the small battery is at 0%, and the big one is at 50%. The small battery would have used up one cycle, while the big battery only used up half of a cycle. The bigger battery would last twice as long.
Staying in the optimal zone is easier with a bigger battery. You’ll get the most cycles out of your battery by charging it to only 80% and not using it past the 20% mark. If you’re “running on fumes” often, your battery won’t last as long. Getting a portable power station with more capacity than you plan on using lets you stay in the recommended 80%–20% range.
2. More Efficient
An inverter is needed to power the AC (wall-style) outlets and uses a bit of energy to operate. EcoFlow’s inverters are an impressive 90+% efficient, but you can maximize that number with an oversized inverter.
The bigger the EcoFlow portable power station, the bigger the inverter. Inverters, like batteries, perform best when they’re not being maxed out. If your portable power station has an output of 1000W, the inverter will perform more efficiently if you’re drawing 400W–700W rather than 900W–1000W.
Another way to put that: less energy will be used if a 500W refrigerator is plugged into a 1000W portable power station instead of a 600W portable power station. The fridge is still drawing the same amount of watts, but the larger inverter is operating in its sweet spot.
3. Future-proof Planning
Taking lower health into account. Where do you see yourself in five years? How about your battery? By then, it’ll be in poorer health than when you first got it, meaning it won’t hold as much energy. Upsizing your battery keeps you from being restricted down the road.
Expecting the unexpected. A blackout may drag on, or a project may have hit a turn for the worse. With more capacity, energy doesn’t have to be your biggest concern. However, on a lighter note, electronics are becoming a bigger part of our daily lives. Road trips will be a little more bougie, outdoor parties a little more indoorsy. With a bigger battery, you can live a little larger.
